List technicalities

The price range, as shown by the green meters to the left in this list, is based on the prices to purchase items from each brand at our select stores. We always try to include the best online stores for purchasing items from each brand. The price meters are limited to $1,500 in this list. You can click on a brand to see the exact prices.

To rank the brands in this list we score each brand. The score is determined based on how popular the brand is online in social media and in search, how good of a selection of items the brand has for this particular category (wallet), and how luxurious the brand is based on the price range of its items.

The social media and search meters you see when clicking on a brand in the list are all relative to the most popular brand in the list. Unlike for the price meters, we do not limit the social media and search meters. Be aware that his can result in popular brands looking like they are not, just because one of the brands in the list is exponentially more popular.

There will always be one brand with a 100% Google Searches score. That score represents a brands popularity in search. The Google Searches scores for the other brands represents their relative popularity in search.

Prada S.p.A. is an Italian luxury fashion house that was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada. It specializes in leather handbags, travel accessories, shoes, ready-to-wear, perfumes and other accessories.

The company was started in 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino as a leather goods shop – Fratelli Prada – in Milan, Italy. Initially, the shop sold animal goods and imported English steamer trunks and handbags.

Mario Prada did not believe that women should have a role in business, and so he prevented female family members from entering his company. Ironically, Mario’s son harbored no interest in the business, so it was Mario’s daughter Luisa Prada who took the helm of Prada as his successor and ran it for almost twenty years.

Her own daughter, Miuccia Prada, joined the company in 1970, eventually taking over for her mother in 1978.

Prada’s originality made it one of the most influential fashion houses, and the brand became a premium status symbol in the 1990s.

In July 2016, Prada clothing became available to purchase online for the first time through Net-a-Porter and MyTheresa.

As of March 2018, Prada’s sales turned positive after declining since 2014, and their stock jumped 14% at the news.

Stating that Prada would be “(f)ocusing on innovative materials will allow the company to explore new boundaries of creative design while meeting the demand for ethical products,” the company announced in 2019 that fur will be eliminated from the collection and all house brands as of 2020.

Christian Louboutin (born 7 January 1963) is a French fashion designer whose high-end stiletto footwear incorporates shiny, red-lacquered soles that have become his signature.

Initially a freelance designer for fashion houses, he started his own shoe salon in Paris, with his shoes finding favor with celebrity clientele.

He has partnered with other organizations for creative projects including limited edition pieces, gallery exhibits, and a custom bar. His company has since branched out into men’s footwear, handbags, fragrances and makeup.

Louboutin was born and raised in Paris’s 12th arrondissement. He was the only son of Roger, a cabinet-maker, and Irene, a homemaker, both French, from Brittany.

He has three sisters. Louboutin said in a 2012 interview that he was “much darker-skinned than everyone else in his family. You know, I felt I wasn’t French. My family was very French and so I decided they had probably adopted me. But instead of feeling it was terrible and that I was an outsider who had to go and find my real family, I invented my own history, full of characters from Egypt because I was very into the pharaohs.”

He incidentally discovered, following a revelation by one of his sisters in 2014 that his biological father was in fact an Egyptian, with whom his mother Irene had been having a secret affair.

It was founded in 1981 by American designer Michael Kors. The company sells clothes, shoes, watches, handbags, and other accessories.

Michael Kors handbags have been a popular fashion trend among women of all ages.

In 2015, the company had more than 550 stores and over 1500 in-store boutiques in various countries.

Founder Michael Kors enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1977, but dropped out after nine months. Taking a job as a sales person at a boutique called Lothar’s across from Bergdorf Goodman on 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, he later became both the designer and visual display head for the store.

Noticing the displays and garments, Bergdorf’s fashion director Dawn Mello asked if he would show his collection to Bergdorf Goodman’s buyers. In 1981, Kors launched his Michael Kors women’s label at Bergdorf Goodman.

In 1990, the company launched KORS Michael Kors as a licensee.

Putting the KORS line on hold, he designed for other labels before relaunching in 1997 with a lower-priced line, and in the same year was named the first women’s ready-to-wear designer for French house Celine.

In 2002, Kors launched his menswear line. Kors left Celine in October 2003 to concentrate on his own brand via holding company Michael Kors Holdings Limited (MKH Ltd), relaunched with a majority $100M investment from Canadian fashion investor Lawrence Stroll and his Hong Kong-based partner Silas Chou, who had previously purchased Tommy Hilfiger in 1989.

The MICHAEL Michael Kors line was launched in 2004, which included women’s handbags and shoes as well as women’s ready-to-wear apparel.

Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury goods and high fashion brand.

Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Veneto, its atelier is located within an 18th-century villa in Montebello Vicentino. Its headquarters are in Lugano, Switzerland, with offices in Milan and Vicenza, Italy.

In 2001, Bottega Veneta was purchased by Gucci Group, and it is now part of the French conglomerate Kering.

In the 1970s, the company began advertising with the tag line “When your own initials are enough”. By the early 1980s, Bottega Veneta was a favorite of the international jet set, with clients including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the empress Farah Pahlavi.

Andy Warhol made a short film for the company in 1980.

During the 1980s, Bottega Veneta’s fortunes began to decline. In a miscue, the company changed its image and began emblazoning a BV logo on its products.

In February 2001, the struggling company was acquired by Gucci Group for $156 million. Tom Ford, then Gucci Group’s Creative Director, hired Tomas Maier, who had previously worked at Sonia Rykiel and Hermès, as Bottega Veneta’s Creative Director in June of that year.

After receiving total creative control from product and store design to advertising, Tomas Maier set about returning the brand to its original identity. He removed visible logos from the brand’s products, highlighted the signature intrecciato weave, and returned the company’s focus to artisanal production.

Vogue described the change of image as an emerging example of “stealth wealth.”

Bottega Veneta presented its first women’s ready-to-wear runway show in February 2005 and its first men’s runway show in June 2006.

In April 2006, the company launched its first jewelry line and branched out into interiors and furniture design.

There are 251 boutiques in 43 countries owned by Bottega Veneta, and their products are distributed across Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and North America.
