Hermès International S.A., or simply Hermès, is a French high fashion luxury goods manufacturer established in 1837. It specializes in leather, lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, perfumery, jewellery, watches and ready-to-wear.

Its logo, since the 1950s, is of a Duc carriage with horse.

Thierry Hermès was born in Krefeld, Germany, to a French father and a German mother. The family moved to France in 1828.

In 1837, Hermès first established a harness workshop in the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris, dedicated to serving European noblemen. He created high-quality wrought harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade, winning several awards including the first prize in its class in 1855 and again in 1867 at the Expositions Universelles in Paris.

Hermès’s son, Charles-Émile, took over management from his father in 1880 and moved the shop to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it remains.

With the help of his sons Adolphe and Émile-Maurice, Charles-Émile introduced saddlery and started selling his products retail. The company catered to the élite of Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and the Americas.

In 1900, the firm offered the Haut à Courroies bag, specially designed for riders to carry their saddles with them.

In February 2015, Hermès has announced an increase of its turnover of 9.7%, which represents more than €4 billion in sales.

In 2019, the brand was ranked 33rd in the Forbes List “World’s Most Valuable Brands”.

Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo (22 July 1932 – 20 October 2014), known professionally as Oscar de la Renta, was a Dominican fashion designer. Born in Santo Domingo, he was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo.

De la Renta became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy. He worked for Lanvin and Balmain.

His eponymous fashion house has boutiques around the world including in Harrods of London and Madison Avenue in New York.

In 1963, de la Renta turned to Diana Vreeland, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, for advice, saying that what he really wanted was to “get into ready to wear, because that’s where the money is”. Vreeland replied, “Then go to Arden because you will make your reputation faster. She is not a designer, so she will promote you.

At the other place, you will always be eclipsed by the name of Dior. De la Renta proceeded to work for Arden for two years in New York City before he went to work for Jane Derby, an American fashion house. When Derby died in August 1965, de la Renta took over the label.

From 1993 to 2002, de la Renta designed the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain, becoming the first Dominican to design for a French couture house.

In 2006, the Oscar de la Renta label diversified into bridal wear.

Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury goods and high fashion brand.

Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Veneto, its atelier is located within an 18th-century villa in Montebello Vicentino. Its headquarters are in Lugano, Switzerland, with offices in Milan and Vicenza, Italy.

In 2001, Bottega Veneta was purchased by Gucci Group, and it is now part of the French conglomerate Kering.

In the 1970s, the company began advertising with the tag line “When your own initials are enough”. By the early 1980s, Bottega Veneta was a favorite of the international jet set, with clients including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the empress Farah Pahlavi.

Andy Warhol made a short film for the company in 1980.

During the 1980s, Bottega Veneta’s fortunes began to decline. In a miscue, the company changed its image and began emblazoning a BV logo on its products.

In February 2001, the struggling company was acquired by Gucci Group for $156 million. Tom Ford, then Gucci Group’s Creative Director, hired Tomas Maier, who had previously worked at Sonia Rykiel and Hermès, as Bottega Veneta’s Creative Director in June of that year.

After receiving total creative control from product and store design to advertising, Tomas Maier set about returning the brand to its original identity. He removed visible logos from the brand’s products, highlighted the signature intrecciato weave, and returned the company’s focus to artisanal production.

Vogue described the change of image as an emerging example of “stealth wealth.”

Bottega Veneta presented its first women’s ready-to-wear runway show in February 2005 and its first men’s runway show in June 2006.

In April 2006, the company launched its first jewelry line and branched out into interiors and furniture design.

There are 251 boutiques in 43 countries owned by Bottega Veneta, and their products are distributed across Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and North America.

Prada S.p.A. is an Italian luxury fashion house that was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada. It specializes in leather handbags, travel accessories, shoes, ready-to-wear, perfumes and other accessories.

The company was started in 1913 by Mario Prada and his brother Martino as a leather goods shop – Fratelli Prada – in Milan, Italy. Initially, the shop sold animal goods and imported English steamer trunks and handbags.

Mario Prada did not believe that women should have a role in business, and so he prevented female family members from entering his company. Ironically, Mario’s son harbored no interest in the business, so it was Mario’s daughter Luisa Prada who took the helm of Prada as his successor and ran it for almost twenty years.

Her own daughter, Miuccia Prada, joined the company in 1970, eventually taking over for her mother in 1978.

Prada’s originality made it one of the most influential fashion houses, and the brand became a premium status symbol in the 1990s.

In July 2016, Prada clothing became available to purchase online for the first time through Net-a-Porter and MyTheresa.

As of March 2018, Prada’s sales turned positive after declining since 2014, and their stock jumped 14% at the news.

Stating that Prada would be “(f)ocusing on innovative materials will allow the company to explore new boundaries of creative design while meeting the demand for ethical products,” the company announced in 2019 that fur will be eliminated from the collection and all house brands as of 2020.
