Brand Info & History

Yves Saint Laurent SAS, also known as Saint Laurent, is a French luxury fashion house.

The eponymous brand was founded in 1961 by designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, and the current logos were designed in 1963 by A. M. Cassandre.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the firm popularized fashion trends such as the beatnik look, safari jackets for men and women, tight pants and tall, thigh-high boots, including the creation of arguably the most famous classic tuxedo suit for women in 1966, Le Smoking suit.

In 1999, Gucci (owned by PPR) bought the YSL brand and asked Tom Ford to design the ready-to-wear collection, while Saint Laurent would design the haute couture collection.

Today, Saint Laurent markets a broad range of women’s and men’s ready-to-wear products, leather goods, shoes and jewellery. Yves Saint Laurent Beauté also has a notable presence in the luxury beauty and fragrance market, although this is owned by L’Oréal, which holds exclusive licenses for the name.

The Row was established in 2006 by Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen.

Focusing on quality fabrics, attention to details, and precise tailoring, the brand aims to merge aesthetics of timelessness and irreverent classic signatures. The Row’s collections have also experimented with the aesthetic of simplicity.

The idea for the brand started as a personal project in 2005 when Ashley Olsen challenged herself to create a perfect T-shirt. She tested the design on a variety of women of all body shapes and ages in an attempt to find a “commonality in fit and attitude.”

By 2006, the sisters had created a 7-piece collection that included the T-shirt, a pair of cotton sateen leggings, and a cashmere wool tank dress. Barneys New York bought the entire first collection.

The brand has expanded to include ready-to-wear, resort, handbags, sunglasses, and shoes.

Initially, the Olsens did not want their names attached to the brand and preferred to let the clothes speak for themselves. They did not give an interview about The Row for the first three years after its inception.

Brand Info & History

Bottega Veneta is an Italian luxury goods and high fashion brand.

Founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Veneto, its atelier is located within an 18th-century villa in Montebello Vicentino. Its headquarters are in Lugano, Switzerland, with offices in Milan and Vicenza, Italy.

In 2001, Bottega Veneta was purchased by Gucci Group, and it is now part of the French conglomerate Kering.

In the 1970s, the company began advertising with the tag line “When your own initials are enough”. By the early 1980s, Bottega Veneta was a favorite of the international jet set, with clients including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the empress Farah Pahlavi.

Andy Warhol made a short film for the company in 1980.

During the 1980s, Bottega Veneta’s fortunes began to decline. In a miscue, the company changed its image and began emblazoning a BV logo on its products.

In February 2001, the struggling company was acquired by Gucci Group for $156 million. Tom Ford, then Gucci Group’s Creative Director, hired Tomas Maier, who had previously worked at Sonia Rykiel and Hermès, as Bottega Veneta’s Creative Director in June of that year.

After receiving total creative control from product and store design to advertising, Tomas Maier set about returning the brand to its original identity. He removed visible logos from the brand’s products, highlighted the signature intrecciato weave, and returned the company’s focus to artisanal production.

Vogue described the change of image as an emerging example of “stealth wealth.”

Bottega Veneta presented its first women’s ready-to-wear runway show in February 2005 and its first men’s runway show in June 2006.

In April 2006, the company launched its first jewelry line and branched out into interiors and furniture design.

There are 251 boutiques in 43 countries owned by Bottega Veneta, and their products are distributed across Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and North America.

Don Emilio Pucci, Marchese di Barsento (20 November 1914 – 29 November 1992) was a Florentine Italian fashion designer and politician.

He and his eponymous company are synonymous with geometric prints in a kaleidoscope of colors.

Pucci was born in Naples in 1914 to one of Florence’s oldest noble families, and he lived and worked in the Pucci Palace in Florence for much of his life. He was a keen sportsman who swam, skied, fenced, played tennis and raced cars.

Pucci was the first person to design a one-piece ski suit. Although there had been some experiments with stretch fabrics in Europe before the war, Pucci’s sleek designs caused a sensation, and he received several offers from American manufacturers to produce them.

Instead, he left the Air Force and set up an haute couture house in the fashionable resort of Canzone del Mare on the Isle of Capri.

After Emilio Pucci’s death in 1992, his daughter, Laudomia Pucci, continued to design under the Pucci name.

The French LVMH luxury goods empire acquired 67% of Pucci in 2000.

Laudomia became Image Director, while LVMH brought in major designers such as Christian Lacroix (creative director 2002-05), and in October 2005, Matthew Williamson, and Peter Dundas from 2009.

Alexander McQueen is a British luxury fashion house founded by designer Alexander McQueen in 1992.

The house’s early collections developed its reputation for controversy and shock tactics (earning the title “l’enfant terrible” and “the hooligan of English fashion”), with trousers aptly named “bumsters” and a collection entitled Highland Rape.

Alexander McQueen staged lavish and unconventional runway shows, such as a recreation of a shipwreck for his Spring 2003 collection, Spring 2005’s human chess game, and the Fall 2006 show, Widows of Culloden, which featured a life-sized hologram of supermodel Kate Moss dressed in yards of rippling fabric.

In total, McQueen designed 36 collections for his London label, including his MA graduate collection.

During his time as head designer, McQueen was awarded the title “British Designer of the Year” four times between 1996 and 2003; he was also appointed a CBE and named International Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers in 2003.

In December 2000, the Gucci Group acquired 51% of his company and appointed him as Creative Director before launching stores in London, Milan, New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Ford directed the Academy Award–nominated films A Single Man (2009) and Nocturnal Animals (2016).

He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Ford began studying interior architecture at The New School’s art and design college, Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but graduated with a degree in architecture.

In 1994, Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci.

In his first year at the helm, he introduced Halston-style velvet hipsters, skinny satin shirts and car-finish metallic patent boots.

In 1995, he brought in French stylist Carine Roitfeld and photographer Mario Testino to create a series of new ad campaigns for the company.

Between 1995 and 1996, sales at Gucci increased by 90%.

At one point, Ford was the largest individual shareholder of Gucci stock and options.

By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, was valued at more than $4 billion.
