Gucci was founded by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Tuscany, in 1921.

Gucci generated about €4.2 billion in revenue worldwide in 2008 according to BusinessWeek and climbed to 41st position in the magazine’s annual 2009 “Top Global 100 Brands” chart created by Interbrand; it retained that rank in Interbrand’s 2014 index. Gucci is also the highest-selling Italian brand.

Dawn Mello was hired in November 1989 as Gucci’s executive vice president and chief designer. She reduced the number of stores from +1,000 to 180 in a move to rebuild the brand’s exclusivity. She also reduced the number of items sold by Gucci from 22,000 to 7,000. She revived the Bamboo bag and the Gucci loafer. She moved Gucci’s headquarters back from Milan to Florence, where the history of Gucci is deeply rooted.

In 2011, the company opened the Gucci Museum (Gucci Museo) inside the 14th-century Palazzo della Mercanzia in Florence to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

Bottega Veneta presented its first women’s ready-to-wear runway show in February 2005 and its first men’s runway show in June 2006.

In April 2006, the company launched its first jewelry line and branched out into interiors and furniture design.

Thomas Carlyle Ford (born August 27, 1961) is an American fashion designer and filmmaker.

He launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2006, having previously served as the creative director at Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent.

Ford directed the Academy Award–nominated films A Single Man (2009) and Nocturnal Animals (2016).

He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Ford began studying interior architecture at The New School’s art and design college, Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

He kept visiting Studio 54, where he realized he was gay. The club’s disco-era glamor would be a major influence on his later designs.

Before his last year at New School, Ford spent a year and a half in Paris, where he worked as an intern in Chloé’s press office, inspiring his interest in fashion.

He spent his final year at The New School studying fashion, but graduated with a degree in architecture.

In 1994, Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci.

In his first year at the helm, he introduced Halston-style velvet hipsters, skinny satin shirts and car-finish metallic patent boots.

In 1995, he brought in French stylist Carine Roitfeld and photographer Mario Testino to create a series of new ad campaigns for the company.

Between 1995 and 1996, sales at Gucci increased by 90%.

At one point, Ford was the largest individual shareholder of Gucci stock and options.

By 1999, the house, which had been almost bankrupt when Ford joined, was valued at more than $4 billion.

Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo (22 July 1932 – 20 October 2014), known professionally as Oscar de la Renta, was a Dominican fashion designer. Born in Santo Domingo, he was trained by Cristóbal Balenciaga and Antonio del Castillo.

De la Renta became internationally known in the 1960s as one of the couturiers who dressed Jacqueline Kennedy. He worked for Lanvin and Balmain.

His eponymous fashion house has boutiques around the world including in Harrods of London and Madison Avenue in New York.

In 1963, de la Renta turned to Diana Vreeland, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, for advice, saying that what he really wanted was to “get into ready to wear, because that’s where the money is”. Vreeland replied, “Then go to Arden because you will make your reputation faster. She is not a designer, so she will promote you.

At the other place, you will always be eclipsed by the name of Dior. De la Renta proceeded to work for Arden for two years in New York City before he went to work for Jane Derby, an American fashion house. When Derby died in August 1965, de la Renta took over the label.

From 1993 to 2002, de la Renta designed the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain, becoming the first Dominican to design for a French couture house.

In 2006, the Oscar de la Renta label diversified into bridal wear.

Ironically, Mario’s son harbored no interest in the business, so it was Mario’s daughter Luisa Prada who took the helm of Prada as his successor and ran it for almost twenty years.

Her own daughter, Miuccia Prada, joined the company in 1970, eventually taking over for her mother in 1978.

Prada’s originality made it one of the most influential fashion houses, and the brand became a premium status symbol in the 1990s.

In July 2016, Prada clothing became available to purchase online for the first time through Net-a-Porter and MyTheresa.
